Jackie Bouvier at Sweet Briar College – Vintage photos from the library archives!

I’m in the process of organizing the historic photos of Sweet Briar College. As I was sorting and filing today I came across this wonderful picture of Jackie Bouvier taken when she and her mother visited Sweet Briar probably near 1946. Her mother, Janet Norton Lee, attended Sweet Briar in 1929. Jackie appears to be about 15 or 16 in this photo.

Watch this space! I’ll post more interesting photos as I find them. –Liz

Not many people know that Jackie Kennedy came back to SBC in the early ’80’s when I was a Turning Point student. I believe she came over Christmas break. She came to get instruction from Paul Cronan.

This was kept quiet to keep the media away.

She was absolutely at SBC in ’85 or ’86, but I thought it was in the Spring. It was a weekend and I and some other of my fellow athletes ran into her at the Bistro where she bought a pack of cigarettes! She was as gorgeous as ever in her riding clothes and no makeup. A great Sweet Briar memory!

Thanks for sharing! I was always skeptical of the claim that she was connected to SBC…nice to have some proof 🙂

Just check the list of students from the class of 1929: Janet Lee, who at the time of the above visit would have been Mrs. Hugh Auchincloss, is listed; she was at Sweet Briar only a year, dropping out to marry John Bouvier, Jackie’s father. Jackie was born in July 1929. Several of Jackie’s more credible biographers do mention that her mother attended Sweet Briar.

I remember well when she came back. She did come to ride with Pul Cronin. Apparently they rode together often up in Northern Va. She stayead at the Chaplain’s house for several days, and rode around campus quite openly. the students spoke with her, but never made a “to do” about her being there. She did cause some comment when they went into Lynchbrg for dinner at Emile’s, now Isabella’s when somebody recognized her and called the newspaper. They then left. The newspaper sent reporters to campus, but nobody there admitted to her being there. Even the Security force acted dumb and never admitted that she was on campus. Quite a tribute to SBC;s good manners and good taste!

She had a special booth at the Briar Patch where she would go and eat lunch after her riding lessons. No one bothered her there. It was a really neat time for SBC.

Fantastic photo. Who knew her mother attended SBC. Did she graduate?
